Crude Oil

The world's most-traded physical commodity — grades, assay data, vessel classes, and the documentation discipline crude deals demand.

Crude oil is the unrefined feedstock from which all petroleum products are made, and remains the single most actively traded physical commodity in the world. Unlike refined products, crude is priced against global marker grades (Brent, WTI, Dubai/Oman) with differentials for quality and location, and deals typically involve larger cargo sizes and more elaborate documentation given the values involved. Crude trading sits at the more complex, higher-scrutiny end of commodity brokerage — buyers expect full proof-of-product and proof-of-funds documentation before a deal proceeds to inspection.

Grades & Specifications

- **Light Sweet** — low density (high API gravity), low sulfur; yields more high-value light products (gasoline, naphtha) per barrel, commanding a price premium. - **Medium Sour** — moderate density and sulfur content; the largest-volume traded category globally, forming the basis for many regional benchmarks. - **Heavy Sour** — high density (low API gravity), high sulfur; cheaper per barrel but requires more complex refining to yield the same light-product output. - **Condensate** — very light, low-density liquid recovered alongside natural gas; often used directly as naphtha-substitute feedstock or blended into export streams. API gravity and sulfur content (sweet vs. sour) are the two numbers every crude buyer asks for first, since together they determine which refineries can process the cargo and at what yield.

Quality Standards & Inspection

Crude assay data (a detailed lab breakdown of density, sulfur, distillation yield, and metals content) is the standard reference document buyers request before committing to a deal — sellers of established grades (e.g., a named field or blend) can usually provide a published assay; unnamed or blended cargo requires the buyer to commission their own. Independent inspection (SGS, Intertek, Saybolt) at load port verifies quantity (ullage/draft survey) and confirms the cargo matches the declared quality before bills of lading are issued — for crude this step is treated as non-negotiable by virtually every serious buyer.

Main Producing & Exporting Regions

The Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait) remains the largest source of globally traded crude, exporting predominantly medium and light sour grades. West Africa (Nigeria, Angola) produces mostly light sweet grades favored by refiners seeking high light-product yield. North Africa (Libya, Algeria) supplies light sweet crude primarily to European refiners given proximity. South America (Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana) spans the full spectrum from heavy sour to light sweet, with growing pre-salt production out of Brazil in particular.

Packaging & Logistics

Crude moves exclusively by bulk tanker, sized to the trade lane and cargo volume: VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers, ~2 million barrels) for long-haul Middle East-to-Asia routes, Suezmax for medium-haul routes able to transit the Suez Canal loaded, and Aframax for shorter regional routes. There is no meaningful containerized or small-parcel crude trade — deal sizes are set by vessel economics. FOB and CIF are both common; CIF deals require the seller to also arrange a suitably sized, compliant tanker and insurance, which materially affects who can realistically perform that role.

Key Contract Considerations

Crude SPAs are priced against a floating benchmark (Brent, WTI, or Dubai/Oman) plus or minus a differential reflecting quality and location — this differential, and the exact pricing window used for the benchmark average, needs to be locked precisely, since even small formula ambiguity translates into large dollar swings on cargo-sized volumes. Proof-of-product (tank storage receipt, refinery allocation, or similar) and proof-of-funds are standard pre-conditions before a buyer will proceed past LOI/ICPO stage — crude brokerage carries a disproportionate share of the market's known scam patterns, making NCNDA/IMFPA and counter-party verification especially important here. ---
