LPG

Propane, butane, and their blends — specifications, vessel logistics, and pricing benchmarks for one of the world's most-traded energy commodities.

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is propane, butane, or a blend of the two, kept liquid under moderate pressure for transport and storage. It's one of the most widely consumed energy commodities globally — residential cooking fuel in much of the developing world, a petrochemical feedstock, and an increasingly popular automotive fuel (Autogas) in markets with LPG-friendly infrastructure. LPG trading is seasonal in developed markets (winter heating demand spikes in propane) and relatively stable in developing markets where it's a year-round cooking fuel.

Grades & Specifications

- **Propane** — the lighter of the two gases, dominant in colder climates and as petrochemical feedstock (propane dehydrogenation to propylene). - **Butane** — used more in warmer climates (easier to vaporize at ambient temperature there), and as a gasoline blending component (raises vapor pressure/octane in winter-grade gasoline). - **Mixed LPG (50/50, 70/30)** — blended ratios sold for markets or applications where a specific vapor pressure/performance balance is needed; the ratio itself is the spec. Specification centers on composition (propane/butane ratio), vapor pressure, and sulfur content — LPG specs are simpler than petrochemicals but still commercially material, since a mis-blended cargo affects heating value and appliance compatibility.

Quality Standards & Inspection

LPG quality is typically referenced against ASTM D1835 (Standard Specification for Liquefied Petroleum Gases) or EN 589 (the European automotive LPG standard) depending on destination market. Independent inspection focuses on composition analysis (gas chromatography) and quantity measurement at the loading/discharge terminal, since LPG cargoes are metered by volume and temperature-corrected — a step that requires a specialized inspector, not a general cargo surveyor. SGS and Intertek both offer dedicated LPG quantity/quality surveying.

Main Producing & Exporting Regions

The Middle East (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE) and the United States (driven by shale gas liquids production) are the two largest global LPG exporters, together accounting for the majority of seaborne trade. North Africa (Algeria, Libya) supplies European and Mediterranean markets. Import demand is concentrated in Asia (China, India, Japan, South Korea) and, for Autogas specifically, in markets like Turkey, South Korea, and parts of Europe with established LPG vehicle fleets.

Packaging & Logistics

LPG moves almost exclusively in specialized pressurized vessels — VLGCs (Very Large Gas Carriers) for cargo-scale international trade, smaller pressurized coastal vessels for regional distribution, and ISO tank containers or road tankers for inland/last-mile delivery. This is a category where vessel/equipment specialization matters more than for almost any other commodity here — a standard bulk carrier cannot carry LPG. Typical transit for Middle East-to-Asia LPG cargoes runs 1–2 weeks; longer-haul US-to-Asia routes run 3–5 weeks.

Key Contract Considerations

Because LPG is priced off published indices (Saudi CP — Contract Price — is the dominant regional benchmark, alongside Mont Belvieu for US-origin cargo), the SPA needs to specify exactly which index, which month's publication, and any premium/discount, similar to petroleum products. Vessel compatibility (the buyer's receiving terminal must match the seller's loading terminal specs and the chartered vessel's pressure/refrigeration type) should be confirmed before contract signing, not after — this is one of the more common late-stage deal failures in LPG specifically. Boil-off and quantity measurement methodology should be agreed in advance to avoid disputes over "loaded vs. discharged" volume differences. ---
